Tomas and the Library Lady is based on the real life story of Tomas Rivera. Tomas’ family are migrant workers that travel from Texas to Iowa and back each year. He loves to listen to his grandfather’s stories, and since he knows all the stories his grandfather insists that he goes to the library. During the summer they spend in Iowa, Tomas goes to the library as often as possible and teaches the librarian words in Spanish, and then he goes home to share the new stories he discovered at the library with his family. When his family leaves Iowa the librarian gives him a book as a present, and Tomas becomes the new storyteller of his family.

Becoming Naomi Leon

Naomi Leon lives with her Great-Grandmother, Gram, and younger brother, Owen, in a trailer in Lemon Tree, California. Naomi and Owen are very happy until their alcoholic mother comes home with her new boyfriend to try and take custody of Naomi. Naomi does not want to go live with her mother, so Gram, Owen, Naomi, and their neighbors go to Oaxaca Mexico to find their father. The desperate search goes on for days; however, they eventually find their father who helps Naomi stay with Gram. Naomi grows up in the book and discovers the things that are most important to her.
