Bethany is dropped off in the middle of the night at her Aunt Myrlie’s house, who she didn’t even know existed. Her mother is unable to stop crying and her father will not explain to Bethany why they must leave her with her Aunt. When Bethany goes out into the small community with Myrlie, people look at her like they have seen a ghost. Bethany is shocked to find out that she has a sister that died 20 years before that, which looked almost identical to Bethany. With help from Myrlie, her cousin, birth certificates sent from her father, and a mysterious man Bethany is able to unravel the mystery that surrounds her family.
